Jammin’ with Nature & Rich Red Hues of July

I must admit. I have been stuck not knowing in which direction to take this blog post. June has come and gone. Being in transition confuses me. Am I writing from who I want to be and where I’d like to take my life?  Am I expressing what I feel and think in the present? I realize I ought to begin somewhere and  am certain you all have been there in some form or another. Just do it. Don’t over think it. What ever it is. Easier said than done. My nature overthinks. Not sure what I expect to accomplish, but with courage and motivation, one foot in front of another, we move ahead. Often, when listening to the silence, a sign, an omen, a guiding light appears. Cloud formations for instance. I’m certain there are distant messages within those cloud formations and they are telling us something.

This summer has been filled with a variety of temperatures, beautiful sunshine, weather drama including micro bursts of rain,  balancing  the heat of the day into the nights.  The word balance, I use here, due to my fear of another fire driven summer as the one in 2016. I am grateful that it is not. I love this one. Hark! Loving clouds and rain. I took a FaceBook quiz just the other day to determine where I should reside based on their questions.  I got Seattle! I’ve never visited, but it is definitely on the list. At present, I am enjoying my escapes to the beach, soaking up the sun, and grounding myself in the refreshing salt water on the North Shore. Somehow, I’ve always gravitated North and not towards the Cape. Ever.  The frigid water is always a challenge, numbing the feet and ankles, seemingly not to warm up until well into August-just in time for the disappearance of the greenhead flies. Back on land away from the roaring ocean waves, we see a tinge of the beginning of Autumn preparation.

JULY’S RUBY REDS

So for the moment I will share what I am loving: libations and food. Instead of the blood orange mimosas I have been craving, a seasonal substitution was called for, because blood oranges are not in season. I used a splash of pomegranate/blueberry juice with Veuve Clicquot. Festive and tasting delicious, with just the right amount of twist on a classic glass of champagne, the drink satisfied my passion of the moment. The hollow flutes look so statuesque with the bubbles dancing and rising within.

Accompanying these beautiful drinks, I created two different salads with  a dinner of Middle Eastern inspired marinade over chicken wings.  The first one below, was  from a photo I had seen, so I HAD to try it.  You just have to remember not to slice all the way through the tomato, otherwise you’ll ruin the concept. So simple to create.

Slice a juicy red, orange or your choice heirloom tomato nearly to the bottom. Insert pre-sliced mozzarella rounds, fresh basil leaves, small dollops of pesto, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle black pepper all over, then drizzle a very small amount of rich balsamic on the dish. Let stand and serve at room temperature. Delectable. Try it!  The other red base dish I’ve made recently is another sort of salad which actually worked well with the dish below. This time chick peas and roasted grape tomatoes are the main characters.

I slow-roasted an entire pint or maybe it was two of grape tomatoes. Add olive oil, crushed garlic and a little salt. Set oven at 200 degrees. Roasted them for nearly two hours and no, they did not burn to a crisp – shocking! They caramelized by themselves and basically tasted like candy when done. I realize there is a slight redundancy in the ingredients, but in all honesty, it doesn’t seem like it when you are actually enjoying it. Here we have a red wine vinaigrette which melds the fresh flavors of this hearty salad. One can of chick peas drained and rinsed, half of an English cucumber, quartered, half of an avocado, cubed, lots of fresh basil, black pepper, little French sea salt, and of course those roasted little red tomato critters. Mix together and add the vinaigrette. Done.

WHY EAT RED?

Such a great question. When you are eating vivid or saturated colors, it truly feels like it is so good for the body! Obviously I’ve combined a fair amount of greens in the mix too.  It is a known fact, however, that red foods are the new Power House of nutrition. There is a true cornucopia of red foods, such as strawberries, cherries, raspberries, beets, tomatoes, radicchio, apples and cranberries. The list goes on. Red fruits and vegetables are loaded with powerful and healthy antioxidants, such as lycopene and anthocyanins, which fight heart disease and prostate cancer while decreasing the risk for stroke and macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness in people 60 +).  Tomatoes are loaded with potassium and vitamin C which also protects the heart.  Beets are rich in folate. They are all so positive for the body and the mind. The deeper and more saturated in color the better!

WHY WEAR RED?

July is filled with red. Beyond the scope of food, of course, is the month’s classic birthstone is the Ruby. I have never met a soul who doesn’t favor this stone and this color. The color resonates well with everyone and looks good on everyone. The color is stimulating and fun to look at. Imagine wearing it! Before I continue on the traditional July Birthstone, I wanted to share this newly discovered interest- July Birthstone alternative – Opals! I had no idea the Zodiac shares this stone with other birth months such as October, Libra; November, Scorpio; March, Pisces. I never gravitated towards opals until I found the ones pictured below. Seems like each stone tells a story. Certainly each one is unique. The varying degrees of greens here remind me of my cooking. Whenever there is red food, I find green, too! The two are opposite one another on the color wheel.  Just look at how happy this necklace is!  I named her Calliope. The description and price: https://www.nymphjewels.com/listing/546145435/calliope-triple-strand-necklace-of-opals

And seriously, why wear red?  Red is associated with power, love, nobility and the new one is – (scientists claim) attention to detail. Red is typically known as a sexy color. Red is also the color of energy, passion, action, ambition and determination. Of course, Rubies will vary in tones carrying a little blue hue within them.  Red signifies a pioneering spirit and leadership qualities. It is confidence inducing, helping ban the characteristic of being shy.  This is the color of physical movement, awakening our physical life force. As with gemstones, color can certainly have an effect on us. The color in either apparel or in gemstones can stimulate deeper passions in us such as with love and sex on the positive side.  In China, Red is the color of good luck. In the Indian culture, red symbolizes purity and is often used in wedding gowns.  Red boosts our physical energy levels, increases our heart rate and blood pressure and prompts the release of adrenalin. This color is fast moving, promoting a need for movement and action. Red relates to physical desire in all forms; sexual, appetite and cravings. This intense color means a passionate belief in any issue or undertaking which can include passion for love or for hate.  That said, I present my new collection of rich red hues of July: RUBIES.  Now aren’t they a feast for the eyes! All of the descriptions and pricing information can be found on my site  https://www.nymphjewels.com/shop   I love piling the stones and see how they fall together and how they fall is how they play. The vibe is a very happy one. Don’t you agree?

And for anyone making a trip to New York City next month, I will be exhibiting at N Y Now -Accent on Design Show at the Jacob Javits center with as much jewelry as I can fit in our Pop Up Booth. The invite is below. Would love to hear from you and seeing you would be even a better treat!

Enjoy this glorious summer weather, eat your greens and reds, while wearing them. Watch your moods alter towards a more positive day when you do. Your heart will sing!  It has been my pleasure in sharing everything with you. I hope you had fun too.

Yours in joy,

Dava

Hello Mother. Hello Child. Hello Lavish Earth of Green.

May is whizzing by. Mother’s Day has come and gone, but to me, May is the month of Motherhood. I was born from my Mother. I grew into a woman and now am a Mother. I am my daughter’s Mother. Sounds so weird putting it into words, but I look at my life and sometimes wonder…  how did I get here?  Just like David Burn’s words from Talking Heads. He nailed a very powerful thought in those 4 words!  Truth is, I still feel like a child. My parents were ultra strict with me. First born.  I couldn’t wait to depart from the family nest. My relationship with my Mom was hot and cold. I began rebelling at the age of 17, shortly before graduating high school.  I honestly thought I was done with it upon graduation, but little did I realize, it came with me once I entered the “art school” environment. In my glory. Free at last. Until I missed her food. I missed family meals. I missed the luxury of the washing machine and dryer at my finger tips.  At that time, my Mom wasn’t sure how to handle me. I had left the roost and was proud of it. Probably could have been a bit more humble, but I wear my emotions and thoughts on my sleeve. I’m still trying to hone in on that one. My daughter, on the other hand, wise beyond her years.

Born in another era. I always thought she was born at the age of 5. Needless to say, wiser than I growing up. I find myself consulting her at times due to her astute common sense. This I have now, but lacked  growing up due to feeling so much restraint. This is the notion of the child becoming the parent. So bizarre when you think of it, but it definitely happens. I am aware of falling into this trap, which will burden her prematurely. Being an only child, I can only imagine the scenarios she creates in her imagination about her Dad and I aging.  Goodness, Dava, keep it in perspective, I tell myself. But the fact remains, we become our parents. Then our children become us. They later become our caretakers, with a new sense of responsibility. This is called the circle of life. The seasons turn and evolve like clockwork as life goes on. Never once to forget how fragile. Because at the drop of a hat it can disappear. It’s crucial to remind yourself daily to appreciate what we have.

We are deeply emerged in the spring evolution and the buoyancy of how refreshing it is. I observe  the sun graze through the sky during the day, teasing its colorful light through the leaves. Each night as it sets, offering a bevy of colors such as a watermelon, cherry, paprika, mandarin, and  periwinkle if we’re lucky. Gazing off into the sunset — with the delicate silhouette of the branches of the  trees  casting  themselves against the colorful sky; such an inspiring feeling. It brings me deep within my soul and reminds me that the child resides within. She wants to play in this weather, but sometimes needs to be enticed to escape from her safe place. I want to dance naked in the rain and play. No space for any inhibitions here!

Pluviophile

The beauty of the mist warrants such frivolity. It is very freeing and primal. No conditions. Letting go. Something about the rain, lately, that I find soothing.  I’ve referenced my love of rain in recent blog posts, and anyone in my life knows this to be a fact. As odd as it may seem. What I learned in creating this particular blog journey, is that I am a Pluviophile. Lover of rain; one who finds joy and peace of  mind during rainy and misty days and evenings. If we can practice this through meditation, or what ever spiritual practice what have you, the inner child will coddle you. Nurture you. This is where your true spirit lives. Getting in touch with her/him daily will unlock all sorts of pent-up, repressed thoughts and notions that can prevent you from growing and pursuing your life  purpose.  Naturally, the rain does this also. The rain is no longer a melancholy message to me. It induces inner peace and in that, enables me the freedom to weave my life into any form imaginable. All I have to do is stay out of my own way! Can you relate?

As the month of May progresses, the peak of spring is so easily recognizable. The grounds are saturated in luxuriant abundance of natural color, grateful to Mother Earth’s gift of rain, moisture and mist. The terrain is fresh and rich with lush, invigorating green hues. This is contagious. Nature produces fresh nutrients this time of the year. Asparagus and fiddleheads will pop into your mind immediately. However, when I was in Chicago for Mother’s Day, Aya and I ordered this amazing, yet simple appetizer at Ema. It features a Mediterranean inspired menu. We had Avocado & Sweet Pea, with jalapeno, lime, cilantro and mint. It felt like spring in each and every bite. Watermelon radish, an endive spear and sweet butter lettuce off set this dish of Spring. The combination, was unique yet simple and delicious.  I highly recommend this restaurant if you visit this great city.

The Greens of May

It’s no mystery why green is the color of the month of May, consequently offering its birthstone in a variety of new green tones. Traditionally it was Emerald. What I have since learned, is that there are more gemstones used for May birthstone now, more than ever.  A modern list of May birthstones have been assigned by gemology associations. My favorite is Chrysoprase. I’ve used these brilliant stones in the past, but not for a while. Ironically upon attending the latest Gem Show a couple of weeks ago, I couldn’t take my eyes off of the brilliancy and aliveness of these stones. I scooped them up. I should say, they invited me to take them home. That’s the uniqueness of live creatures from earth. Yes. Gemstones are alive, hence the reason they hold many healing powers, and to some, magical ones. That’s what it can really feel like when you’ve met your match. Or when your Gemstone Match finds you!  The elements below are entering production.  They consist of 14mm faceted Chrysoprase rondelles, and 4mm faceted Peridot gemstones.  This brilliant stone appears to glow, in the dark and in the light of day.

Chrysoprase is said by the ancients to promote love and truth.  It also inspires hope to allow personal insights. It stimulates creativity and encourages fidelity in business and personal relationships. This stone attracts live, abundance and prosperity. It can aid in coping with depression and anxiety. Chrysoprase encourages deep meditative states, is calming and creates an open mind to new situations. It is a non-egotistical stone, casting the bearer to trust in life and what life offers.

The photo teaser directly above is in production now. The disc is Chalcedony base, tonal similar to Chrysoprase. The Diamond design sets on top with a pave ring surrounding the near 2″ disc. This brilliant piece will be available for purchase soon.

For immediate gratification, however the two necklaces above are currently in stock. They reflect a bit of earth combined with the brightly colored Chrysoprase gemstones. The choker has an 18k gold OM pendant and clasp. The other piece is a single 32″ strand consisting of Chrysoprase briolettes, Pyrite and Sandalwood. They wear beautifully together in harmony or alone.

The Treasures of Autumn

The light of day has altered considerably this month. I see darkness dip into the evening earlier and earlier. The true onset of autumn, begins, exposing what the following months will portray.IMG_0088 Crisper days approach, as we begin to notice the vivid reds, oranges, and golds of autumn and how they naturally paint the lingering trees. The leaves begin to fall on the ground, leaving trails of intense colors behind. The sounds of walking through the leaves is so reminiscent of child hood, sparking a sense of freedom from within.  Having the privilege of enjoying these nuances the treasures found and discovered during this season  can be inspiring and invigorating. These are places where creativity has the opportunity to emerge. The photo above and below are a real place, taken as the sun begins to set. The little white shape barely visible beneath is a swan. Her white feathers creating such a graceful contrast to the vivid tones in nature.IMG_0107Color is always around us. It has many psychological effects on our moods, emotions, attitude and behavior. Two main  categories of how this works is simple. Warm and cool colors.  The tones you see in the photo above can spark emotions ranging from warmth and passion, to possible hostility and anger. These warm tones of oranges, reds, yellows and gold are stimulating colors.IMG_0094 These colors are often associated with food and have the ability to enhance your appetite. The colors of fall, as intense as they can be, are so welcoming as the temperatures drop. Wearing these tones also help us to mentally stay warm despite waking to 41 degree temperatures in the morning. Screen Shot 2015-10-11 at 12.05.50 PMAs I mentioned wearing these colors, the similarity in nature and my necklace are obvious!  I created this multi strand necklace using  hessionite garnet strands  and contrasted it with rich olive wood. Sort of like the bark from the trees and the leaves dangling gracefully as they await their turn to drop to the ground, covering what previously lies there. See the combination below. Earthy, with a touch of glamour and warmth.IMG_7152Triple strand necklace with 2 Hessionite Garnet strands, ranging from deep brick, to  golden-yellow tones. The olive wood off sets the gemstones by adding density, earth and grounding to this piece. Sterling silver vintage beads are dispersed throughout the deep rich wood. This marvelous oval pendant culminates all of the tones in this necklace. Measuring about 2″ in length, the healing properties of this Pietersite stone pendant connects you to your own internal guidance system, aiding in life’s changes.IMG_7149Pietersite. Tempest stone holding the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven by linking the spiritual realm with everyday living, dispelling illusion and assisting in the recognition of the beauty of the soul. Pietersite offers a mixture of both warm as well as cooler tones within the stone, and this one above is clearly the warmer version, keeping on trend with the subject in this blog journey; Autumnal tones. The necklace is  available at my shop, MATSU. Come on in and try it on!

Transitioning into my next topic, please allow me to  present another autumnal vision. Starshaped moss as the bed, with  vivid leaves lying on top of a natural state of beauty. Those brightly colored leaves are dancing on the moss.

May Emeralds, June Pearls and Spiritual Antioxidants

The month of May is a whirlwind in contrast to the ever slow pace of  Winter months left behind. Seems like history now.

Entering late spring, the momentum and energy of the season, sparks our souls and anything stagnantly left over from where we were in the past.   Now sizzling with excitement and potential, in contrast, we can see how our minds glazed over during our long hibernation period. It’s easy to forget how greenery can be so inspiring, fresh and uplifting.  The flowering trees are icing on the cake. Such a wondrous contrast having cohabited with nature’s stark, naked branches as the result of the season’s natural full swing course. Welcoming the bounty, blooming in all varieties. Flowering trees such as the one below, are warmly welcomed as they create a canopy over the St. Botolph Street area. This intoxicating sight can transport you right off the city street.

IMG_4028In more rural areas, the color green is most prominent. All different values and tones of this earthy refreshing hue are apparent. Green is the color of renewal and rebirth. Representing harmony, balance and nature. Green symbolizes good luck and health. It has a calming influence, and promotes health and healing. People who love green tend to be loving and nurturing.

IMG_8595_2May’s birthstone is Emerald. Gem of Venus. The deeper and more vivid the color green, the more valuable, the stone. Known as the “stone of succesful love”, Emerald opens and nurtures the heart chakra. This stone is also known to release inner negativity you may be holding on to. Within nature, this wonderful hue exudes its color and energy of the green ray.  Emerald celebrates May.  Appearing in later Spring, everything is lush, especially after rain. The Nymph necklace below personifies the variations of colors within the stones, creating definition and dimension within this piece.IMG_4534Emerald enhances unconditional love, unity and promotes friendship. Serenity, intuition, intelligence, clear vision, truth and communication are all traits induced when wearing Emerald. The double strand Emerald necklace below reflects a slightly different cut than the smooth  graduated stones above. You can see a tremendous variation within the stones here, partially due to their cut facets. This piece has a focal pendant of pave diamonds in the shape of an Angel’s wing, encouraging new beginnings and freedom.

Available now, at MATSU.IMG_4492Continue to enjoy this Spring’s bevy of greens in nature, when walking in the woods, or driving your car. Don’t take it for granted! As the months glide by, late Spring into Summer, and the days become much brighter longer, we come upon June. The month of the Summer Solstice and the longest day of the year; June 21. This event is a couple of weeks away, but honestly, once the fire flies hit, it seems like time simply whizzes by! I am combining 2 months in this one blog post, because just that…. the month of June is already upon us. It’s magnificent birthstone is the Pearl. Spiritual Antioxidants! Look at the lustre, and the tonal variation of these Tahitian babies… just beautiful. Pearls have healing qualities associated with lunar energy, and is the gemstone of the planet MOON.Screenshot 2015-06-03 14.00.02

Coming in all sizes, colors and shapes, this classic stone is a sure fit as an addition into everyone’s wardrobe of clothing, or jewel collection. This stone is indeed an organic gem, created by living creatures. The only gemstone made by living animals, in fact. Harvesting Pearls from mollusks does not kill the animal. Saltwater pearls come from oysters and freshwater pearls come from the mussel.Screenshot 2015-06-03 14.18.45

One who wears or possesses a pearl enjoys the good fortune and is blessed by the goddess Lakshimi ( goddess of prosperity), lives long and acquires vitality and intelligence. Pearl signifies faith, charity and innocence. It enhances personal integrity and helps to provide a focus to ones attention. Interestingly, Pearl inhibits boisterous behavior. Purity, Honesty, Innocence, Integrity, Focus, Concentration, Wisdom…are traits of the mysterious Pearl.IMG_4854

The photo above is Tahitian pearl, with a couple of ruby accents sitting nearby, suspended from elliptical shape faceted green amethyst necklace. This piece is 22″ long. I love the combination of the stones, and the pearl. The deep colored pearl adds  natural serenity. Also available at MATSU, now.

The month of June is named after the Roman goddess Juno- wife of Jupiter and queen of the gods. Joyous June. Winter is gone. Moving through the Spheres of Life.

IMG_2136

The life we were given, and born into has somewhat got it's map. We are able to guide ourselves on the map, but take necessary turns and veering off when we wish. This often can lead us toward surprises and new beginnings. It is about taking a chance, and listening to your inner child, guardian angel, the devil, the divine spirit within, or just simple adventure. It is here where we learn and experience the unknown. It is also here where growth develops.

My journeys in life were rather predictable when I was running Eastern Accent – the store and then into Matsu. Each day was a delight, but still within a realm of what was occurring in that time span. Upon closing the store, so much weight was lifted from my shoulders, my heart and mind. More weight than I care to discuss in my blog journey, but trust me- it was still rather frightening. Not really having a plan in place, I had to find a way to welcome this period and surrender to the process that seeds were silently growing.

IMG_2037

This was a time in my life that I had to completely turn it all over to the heavens, and just surrender. The period betwix and between closing doors and then waiting for others open, was the most difficult time of my life. It was like mourning the loss of something that you created from birth. That run was complete and done, though. No looking back. Just kept on placing one foot in front of the other. Self employment always keeps you alert and on your toes. Seeking opportunities and being steadfast in doing so, built stamina, life experience and knowledge. Searching for the tools in order to cope was frustrating at the time- but in retrospect, truly a place where I grew. Inspiration was medicine for me.

IMG_2162

Cooking, painting, yoga and traveling helped aid the weaknesses I felt during these months. My body collapsed, my mental state was week and simple frustration were delt with more often than I care to admit.

I practiced using the tools above to keep my heart out of the dark, and sometimes more ease with it than at other times, I just kept on placing one foot in front of another. Interesting products, designing and creating more Nymph pieces and lots of reading helped. Marketing and sales at Eastern Accent International gave me a voice , as does writing on my blog.

The company run by Masayuki Muramatsu is something that I am most familiar with, but my goal was to elevate it to the next level. Reaching more clientele on a National level was my personal challenge. I loved it. Now working on upgrading the website; we will be able to expand the audience. This will be my on going project and pleasure.JapaneseModernDesign.com.   We will be adding  new products, company profile and FaceBook Page.  One concern is that Eastern Accent International is for the trade- and  our goal and  wish is for  all of you to have access to these wonderfully edited and carefully chosen exquisite goods  that  have been imported. Life has taken a turn, and now that the sun is finally shining and the month of May has had it's nurturing from Mother Nature, the foliage is lush and green. The flowers are blooming. The birth of Spring is here.

Inspiration comes in all forms, and recognizing it is key. Brimfield is one place that I go to in search of something odd, something old, history and fun. This is inspiration. The item, the colors, the tones… one just never knows what lurks around the corner! IMG_2148

I found this item above. It has life.. to me. Time goes by. The photo below, I fell in love with, due to the saturated tones and the hand made feel of these yarns. I really love them. I see a sweater, fashion and then realized how much I honestly do miss what I did for 31 years. Retail. Inspiring people in their lives and the way they dress. First let's look at the tones here in these hand made yarns. IMG_2117 The one other thing I must show you is a before photo of the bone. As you can see, I am swinging myself towards jewels, clothing and accessories here, and about to make an announcement- if I could stop expressing long enough! Look at this pile of bone from Ethiopia ! Soon to be in the Nymph Collection.IMG_2132

Consequent to my retail absence and new developments during the aftermath of closing Matsu.. my creative mind led me back to do what I love the most… and that involves all of you. I am now styling the best way I know how- at Neiman Marcus, Boston. We can all play together again!

I share with you, the excitement and fresh discovery of this  community of fashion, ready to wear, Couture, home accessories, mens , and a most vast variety of shoe collections ever.

The jewelry department is beyond exquisite.-  We get to play and covet, sell and consume these gorgeous wares through out the entire store. Let's face it. I have a lot to learn. Understanding the nature of the beast, each secret that lies within each department I yearn to learn all about !

Come play… On your way to lunch, or home or just play hookie!

I look forward to seeing you at Neimans, Copley.

Dava
